Nepal Launches Investigation into New Chinese-Built Airport

Many developing countries are considering the implications of borrowing heavily from China for major infrastructure projects. In Nepal, anti-corruption officials have launched an investigation into a flagship airport financed and constructed by Chinese state-owned companies.

The $216 million international airport in Pokhara, which opened in January, was financed by China more than a decade ago. China CAMC Engineering, a construction arm of the state-owned conglomerate Sinomach, served as the contractor.

The airport has struggled to attract regular international flights, causing concerns about its ability to generate enough revenue to repay its Chinese lenders. Nepali officials have requested China to convert the loans into grants to ease the financial burden, but China has not agreed to do so.

It was reported last month that CAMC had exaggerated the project’s cost and disregarded quality control efforts, prioritizing its own business interests. Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority, overseeing the project, did not resist, reluctant to upset Beijing regarding this important project.
