Las Vegas Commemorates 70 Years of Matrimony

Las Vegas is a place where reality melts into fantasy. It is a destination filled with dazzling sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids, and medieval castles. The city offers endless entertainment, making it a popular destination for weddings. The clerk of Clark County, Nev. estimates that about 80,000 couples exchanged wedding vows in Las Vegas in 2022. Iconic celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, as well as Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, are part of the many couples married in the city. In fact, Clark County issued its five millionth marriage license in 2022, and celebrations for the 70th anniversary as the “Wedding Capital of the World” took place on Sept. 23. Las Vegas first claimed this title in 1953, during the same year that Frank Sinatra began performing at the Sands Hotel and Casino, further popularizing the city as a tourist destination. The city is currently undergoing significant changes, including the addition of a new 3.8-mile Formula 1 Grand Prix track and the innovative Sphere performance venue, covered in 1.2 million LED screens and home to U2’s 25-show residency. Movies such as “Viva Las Vegas” and “The Hangover” have immortalized Las Vegas weddings. The city attracts millions in tourist spending, with the weddings industry alone accounting for $2.5 billion of that. There are about 100 chapels and approximately 18,000 people employed in the weddings industry. Las Vegas quickly became a popular spot for weddings starting in 1931 when Clark County eliminated the blood tests and waiting periods previously required. The city also marketed itself as a quick escape from Los Angeles, drawing celebrities and other visitors. Elopements have been increasingly popular in recent years, as many couples opt for intimate wedding experiences. Most Vegas weddings are elopements due to the casual, no-frills 15-minute ceremonies offered by chapels. The iconic wedding drive-through window was born at the Little White Wedding Chapel in 1991. The option for themed weddings, such as gothic, Elvis, and Star Trek weddings, also began to appeal to couples. For grand and elaborate weddings, casinos and venues lining the strip offer custom wedding packages, some of which start at $35,000. The city also boasts the world-famous strip, where the Clark County Marriage License Bureau issues about 219 licenses a day to couples, and chapels stay open until midnight. Downtown, the Office of Civil Marriages hosts courthouse weddings every 15 minutes. A couple from Los Angeles commented that Las Vegas felt romantic to get married in. Nearby, chapels like Chapel of the Flowers and A Little White Wedding Chapel beckon couples. Elvis weddings are popular, with impersonators like Ron DeCar officiating 150 to 200 Elvis weddings a month. Other venues where weddings occur include the Little Church of the West and the Graceland Wedding Chapel. The variety of options in Las Vegas has made it a preferred destination for couples celebrating their love, from spontaneous elopements to grand celebrations, conveniently located in “The Wedding Capital of the World.”
