Fashion and politics have always had an interesting relationship, especially when it comes to acceptance speeches. This was the focus of the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, which was held at the American Museum of Natural History. Despite the glitz and glamour, the event was about championing creativity, diversity, and inclusion within the American industry, according to chairman Thom Browne.
The evening also celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Versailles, where American designers challenged the French. The winner of the men’s wear designer of the year award, Willy Chavarria, reflected on the state of the world and the need to stand with those who are being hurt.
Other winners spoke about how fashion had provided a sense of belonging and empowerment. The most emotional moment came from Maria Cornejo, receiving the lifetime achievement award, who dedicated her award to peace and the voiceless innocent children. In the end, the idea of advocating for those who are voiceless may have been the biggest winner of the night.
